"So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." -John 13:12-17
In this passage Christ is with His disciples where they are celebrating the Last Supper. He is their leader and at their time of supper, if anyone should be served you would think it would be the Son of God. Instead what we see here is Christ is the one that is serving. Christ makes sure that they know the position they hold Him at "Teacher and Lord" is accurate. He does this so that when He serves them they know that the Son of God serves and if the Son of God is serving then who are we (the disciples) to not be serving.
Which is the very thing that Christ brings their attention to. It was to not only set an example to them but set an example to us. In the rat race of life and career it is easy to get caught up in trying to be the best. God isn't looking for the best. We see many times throughout Scripture that God isn't looking for the best but those that are willing. From Abraham to the Shepherds at Jesus' birth, God looks to use those that are willing to serve. We as Christians should seek to serve God, and in order to do so we must humble ourselves and seek to serve. So as you go about your daily life, seek ways you can serve those around you, and how you can be of better service to the Kingdom of God.
